January is the valley's reset month

January is the month the Central Valley catches its breath. The holiday rush is over, the mornings turn cold and foggy, the citrus is heavy on the trees, and the calendar opens up again. This is the roundup we would hand a friend over coffee, gathered from public event calendars and year-round traditions across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, and Kerman.

A quick note before the list: winter events are often announced closer to the season, so dates can shift. Check with each event host before you head out, and know that what follows is built on the traditions that come back every single year.

Fresno: Bulldog basketball, markets that never close, and MLK weekend

January belongs to the Bulldogs. Fresno State men's and women's basketball are in the heart of their Mountain West season, with home games at the Save Mart Center most weeks through the month. The schedule is always worth a look on gobulldogs.com, and a January night under the lights is one of the coziest ways to spend an evening in Fresno.

The farmers markets do not take January off. The Vineyard Farmers Market at Shaw and Blackstone runs Saturdays from 7 AM to noon and Wednesday afternoons, rain or shine, and it has been a valley habit for more than 35 years. The Manchester Center Farmers Market on East Shields Avenue keeps its Friday rhythm from 8 AM to 4 PM with live music and food trucks, and the Kaiser Farmers Market stays open on Wednesdays through the winter. Citrus is the star this time of year, and the Fresno County Citrus and Fall Foliage Trail runs through the end of January for u-pick stops and scenic drives across the county.

Mid-month, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration returns, hosted by the Fresno MLK Unity Committee and the City of Fresno. The weekend around the holiday, Monday, January 18, brings the garlanding ceremony at Courthouse Park, a march, and a peace vigil, a meaningful and family-friendly way to spend the long weekend.

Clovis: the MLK breakfast and Saturday market mornings

The MLK weekend community breakfast lands at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District on 4th Street, a long-running part of the valley's celebration that brings neighbors together around the holiday. It is the kind of event where you run into half the town.

Every Saturday morning, the Old Town Clovis Farmers Market keeps its year-round rhythm on Pollasky Avenue between 5th and Bullard, roughly 9 to 11:30 AM. In January the stalls shift to winter citrus and greens, and a cup of coffee on a cold morning on Pollasky is one of the simplest pleasures the valley offers.

Madera: a quiet month done right

Madera County keeps January low-key, and that is exactly right. The Tesoro Viejo Farmers Market takes its seasonal break after the fall and returns in spring, so Thursdays in town are a little quieter until the weather warms. It is a good month for the things that do not need a calendar: a slow drive through the orchards, breakfast at a local spot in Old Town Madera, or an afternoon at Courthouse Park.

Out toward Madera Ranchos, Hensley Lake stays open through the winter for fishing and quiet walks along the shoreline, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a short drive up County Road 400. On a clear January day the foothills are sharp against the sky, and the lake is a peaceful place to stretch your legs.

Kerman: small-town winter at its most honest

Kerman's January calendar is quiet, and that is part of what makes the town work. After the harvest rush and the holiday season, the community settles into its everyday rhythm: neighbors walking Kerckhoff Park on cold afternoons, the senior center's regular programs, and the simple comfort of a small town with room to breathe.

If your January is about slowing down, Kerman is a good reminder that you do not need an event calendar to enjoy where you live. Sometimes the best weekend is the one spent close to home.

January is when the spring market starts to wake up

January is the traditional kickoff of the valley's spring market. Buyers start looking in earnest after the holidays, sellers begin preparing their homes, and the listings that come out early in the year tend to set the tone for the season. It is a great month to take stock of your own plans with no pressure attached.
