February is when the valley wakes up in color
February is the month the Central Valley starts to bloom. The almond orchards turn white and pink, the days get a little longer, and the fog finally starts to lift. This is the roundup we would hand a friend over coffee, gathered from public event calendars and the year-round traditions across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, and Kerman.
A quick note before the list: spring events are often announced closer to the season, so dates can shift. Check with each event host before you head out, and know that what follows is built on the traditions that come back every single year.
Fresno: the Blossom Trail, the Rogue Festival, and Bulldog baseball
February's signature is the Fresno County Blossom Trail, a self-guided driving loop of roughly sixty to seventy miles through the county's blossoming fruit and nut orchards. It kicks off around mid-February and runs into mid-March, and it has been a valley tradition since 1988. On a clear day the orchards are a sea of white and pink, and it is one of the most beautiful drives in California. Pack a thermos, roll the windows down, and take the long way home.
The Tower District comes alive late in the month with the Rogue Festival, Fresno's annual fringe performing-arts festival. It runs from late February into early March, and it fills the neighborhood's theaters, cafes, and galleries with comedy, music, and theater you will not see anywhere else. It is quirky, affordable, and wonderfully unpolished, and it is a great excuse to wander Tower.
February also brings the return of Fresno State baseball at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium, with the Bulldogs' home opener early in the season. The men's basketball team stays busy at the Save Mart Center through the heart of Mountain West conference play. Both schedules live on gobulldogs.com, and a night cheering on the home team is a cozy way to spend an evening.
The farmers markets do not slow down. The Vineyard Farmers Market at Shaw and Blackstone runs Saturdays and Wednesday afternoons, the Manchester Center Farmers Market on East Shields Avenue keeps its Friday rhythm from 8 AM to 4 PM, and the River Park Farmers Market is open Tuesday evenings. Citrus is still the star this time of year, and the ume blossoms at Shinzen Garden in Woodward Park peak in late January and early February for a quiet walk.
Clovis: Saturday market mornings and Old Town's steady rhythm
Every Saturday morning, the Old Town Clovis Farmers Market keeps its year-round pace on Pollasky Avenue between 5th and Bullard, roughly 9 to 11:30 AM. In February the stalls lean toward citrus and early greens, and a warm cup of coffee on a cool morning on Pollasky is one of the simplest pleasures the valley offers.
Old Town itself is quiet and steady this time of year, which is exactly its charm. It is a good month for a slow breakfast, a browse through the vintage shops, and a walk down the historic main street before the spring crowds arrive.
Madera: orchard drives and a Thursday market
Madera County's almond and stone-fruit orchards are part of the same early bloom as the rest of the valley, so February is a beautiful month for a slow drive through the country roads around Madera and out toward Madera Ranchos. The foothills are still green from the winter rains, and the orchards are waking up.
The Madera Certified Farmers Market gathers Thursdays at Court House Park on Yosemite Avenue during the season, a dependable stop for local produce as the weather turns. Check the schedule before you go, and on a clear February afternoon it is a pleasant way to spend a bit of the day in town.
Kerman: a quiet month, and that is the point
Kerman's farmers market takes February off. It returns in March and runs through the spring and early fall, so the town's evenings stay quiet until the weather warms. That is not a downside, it is the character of the place.
February in Kerman is for the unhurried things: a walk around Kerckhoff Park on a cool afternoon, a slow morning at a local spot, and the simple comfort of a small town with room to breathe. Sometimes the best weekend is the one spent close to home.
February is when the spring market starts to stir
February is when the valley's spring market really starts to wake up. Buyers begin their search in earnest, sellers start preparing their homes, and the first listings of the year tend to set the tone for the season. It is a great month to take stock of your own plans with no pressure attached.
