October is the valley's golden month
October is the month the central San Joaquin Valley shows off: the first cool mornings of the season, harvest in full swing, and a calendar packed with fairs, festivals, and family nights. This is the roundup we would hand a friend over coffee, put together from public event calendars across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, and Kerman.
A quick note before the list: dates and details can shift, so check with each event host before you head out. And if you are thinking about a move this fall, hang around to the end, because October is one of the busiest months in our world too.
Fresno: the fair, the zoo, and Bulldog Saturdays
The headline all month is the Big Fresno Fair, Wednesday, October 7 through Sunday, October 18, at the Fresno Fairgrounds on South Chance Avenue. Twelve days of carnival rides, livestock exhibits, horse racing, fair food, and a concert lineup, including the PRCA-sanctioned Pro Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10. It is a hard one to beat for a low-stress family outing, and tickets are easy to find on the fair's own website, fresnofair.com.
For the younger crowd, Zoo Boo at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo runs Thursday through Saturday, October 22 to 24, with trick-or-treating, costumes, and pumpkin fun after dark on Belmont Avenue. And Bulldog Saturdays are back: Fresno State hosts Boise State on October 10 and Oregon State on Halloween night, October 31, at Valley Children's Stadium. Tailgates, cool fall air, and a packed house are about as Central Valley as it gets.
If you would rather be outdoors, Planet Pumpkin on East Nees Avenue stays open daily through October 31 with a pumpkin patch, train rides, bounce houses, and face painting, and the Vineyard Farmers Market at Shaw and Blackstone runs year-round on Saturdays from 7 AM to noon and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 PM.
Clovis: a drone light show, a car show, and market Saturdays
Clovis opens October with Clovis Night Out, Saturday, October 3, from 4 PM until dark at David McDonald Park on Temperance Avenue. It is the city's 15th annual free community celebration with vendors, entertainment, and a Skye Dreams drone light show after dark, the kind of event where you run into half the neighborhood.
Later in the month, Walktober Fest returns to Old Town Clovis on Saturday, October 17, from 5 to 8:30 PM, with beer and wine tastings at more than 20 stops, live music, and food trucks. Car lovers should mark Sunday, October 25, for the Old Town Harvest Car Show on Pollasky Avenue, from 9 AM to 2 PM.
One favorite carries through all year: the Old Town Clovis Saturday Farmers Market on Pollasky Avenue between 5th and Bullard, roughly 9 to 11:30 AM. The Friday evening market takes a seasonal break after September, but the Saturday market is a year-round habit we never skip.
Madera: a classic rock night and a free speedway Saturday
Madera's October kicks off with Foghat live at ApCal Rock N' Ranch on Saturday, October 3, at 6:30 PM, a classic-rock night out at the old Applegate Ranch amphitheater. Out in Madera Ranchos, the American Heart Association Central Valley Heart and Stroke Walk steps off from the Tesoro Viejo Welcome Center on Saturday, October 10, from 8 to 11 AM, a friendly, family-paced morning with breakfast and refreshments.
At Madera Speedway on Cleveland Avenue, Saturday, October 24, brings the 200 Lap Enduro, an Extreme Barrel Race, and a Pumpkin Smash starting at 10 AM, and it is free to watch. Then the Tesoro Viejo Farmers Market hosts a Trunk or Treat on Thursday, October 29, at 6 PM, a safe, easy way to do Halloween early with the kids.
Whether you live in town, out in Madera Acres, or up in the Ranchos, most of these are within a short drive, which is the whole point of country living close to the city.
Kerman: health, community, and Halloween warm-ups
Kerman keeps October practical and neighborly. The city health fair and flu shot clinic is at Kerckhoff Park on Wednesday, October 21, from 5 to 8 PM, a good excuse to get the flu shot before the holidays and say hi to your neighbors while you are at it.
The Kerman Senior Center closes the month with a Halloween potluck at 11 AM and a Senior Halloween Dance from 6 to 9 PM on Friday, October 30. Small towns know how to mark the season, and Kerman does it every year.
October is a busy month in the valley real estate market too
